IS WHAT IT MEANS. Teddy Roosevelt's Copy. Washington: Pan American
Union 1913. First Edition. Illustrated with photographs and color
maps. Bound in full brown morocco with the title in gilt on the cover
and below it the following gilt presentation: "For/Col. Theodore
Roosevelt/Journey to South America/Compliments of/John Barrett." In
1907 President Theodore Roosevelt appointed George Washington
Goethals as chief engineer of the Panama Canal. The building of the
Canal was completed in 1914, two years ahead of the target date of 1
June 1916, and it formally opened on 15 August 1914. Roosevelt felt
that the Canal's completion was his most important and historically
significant international achievement. Roosevelt went to Brazil in
late 1913, though he brought no books, including this one as far as
we know, with him. Laid in loosely is a printed Special Announcement
