[ROOSEVELT, Theodore (Teddy)] BARRETT, John. PANAMA CANAL. WHAT IT
IS  WHAT  IT MEANS. Teddy Roosevelt's Copy. Washington:  Pan  American
Union  1913.  First Edition.  Illustrated with photographs  and  color
maps.  Bound in full brown morocco with the title in gilt on the cover
and  below  it  the following gilt  presentation:  "For/Col.  Theodore
Roosevelt/Journey  to  South America/Compliments of/John Barrett."  In
1907   President  Theodore  Roosevelt   appointed  George   Washington
Goethals  as chief engineer of the Panama Canal.  The building of  the
Canal  was completed in 1914, two years ahead of the target date  of 1
June  1916,  and it formally opened on 15 August 1914.  Roosevelt felt
that  the  Canal's completion was his most important and  historically
significant  international  achievement.  Roosevelt went to Brazil  in
late  1913,  though he brought no books, including this one as far  as
we know, with him.  Laid in loosely is a printed Special  Announcement
to the Readers.  An outstanding piece of Presidential and Panama Canal
history. Some rubbing to edges. Near Fine and quite unusual.  $1500.00
