EISENHOWER, Dwight. THE STATE OF THE UNION. ADDRESS OF THE
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES DELIVERED BEFORE A JOINT SESSION....
[Washington, DC]: [1953]. First Edition. Printed wraps; 15 pages.
INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the new President on the blank margin at the
very end of the speech to an Ohio newspaper reporter "with best
wishes." Eisenhower's first State of the Union Address, delivered two
weeks after his Inaugural Address. In talking about the Korean War,
Eisenhower states: "Our problem is to achieve adequate military
strength within the limits of endurable strain upon our economy. To
amass military power without regard to our economic capacity would be
to defend ourselves against one kind of disaster by inviting
another." This is a clear foreshadowing of his later landmark warning
against the military industrial complex just before he left office.
Ink stamp on title page: "From the Office of Homer Ferguson United
States Senator." Minor wrinkling and light soiling. Very Good
