New York: Derby & Jackson, 1861. First printing, Full leather, Octavo,
[viii], v-vi, ix-xvi, 13-511 pages, engraved plates. Good.
Scarce first edition of this review of the South's female authors,
published on the very cusp of the Civil War. Includes extracts and
biographical sketches for Catharine Anne Warfield, Almira Lincoln Phelps,
Marion Harland, Anna Cora Mowatt Ritchie, Eleanor Percy Lee, Georgiana A.
Hulse McLeod, Lizzie Petit, Octavia Walton Le Vert and many others. Seven of
these ladies are portrait on full page steel-engraved plates with tissue
guards. The book is bound in leather over bevelled boards with filigree
borders stamped in black and titles stamped in gilt on both boards, spine
lettered in gilt with five raised bands, gilt decorated endpapers, all edges
gilt. The binding shows rubs to edges, chipping to heel of spine, lower
joint is split. Prior owner bookplate on front pastedown and a bit of
scattered foxing inside. $150.00
