London: J. Stone & Co. / Adams Bros., 1906. 80 pp. + Plates. Illus.
with 32 plates (24 photos and 2 drawings of ships, 6 photos of
bulkheads), 2 drawings, and 3 large folding plans. Quarter cloth over
vellum covered boards, stamped in silver, beveled edges. First
edition.
A unique copy of this publicity book to promote the Stone-Lloyd
system of bulkhead doors. Explanation of the doors and illustrations
of the ships using the system including the Lusitania and Mauretania,
Kaiser Wilhelm II, and Deutschland, each with folding plans (16x32
inches each). This copy is further enlarged by use as a scrap book
with 73 photographs added (most 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches), 3 color
illustrations, 2 newspaper ads, one plan, and 24 leaves of lists. All
items are laid in on the endpapers or around the margins so as to
avoid affecting printed text or illustrations. Ship photographs and
snapshots range from 1892 to 1964 but nearly all are from the years
1912 and 1913; the name of the ship and additional data is supplied;
the two newspapers ads feature images of ships. Half of the tipped-in
leaves are lists of 1913 merchant ships and half are silhouettes of
1913 Russian, French, British, and American war ships. A doubly
valuable item. OCLC shows two copies of the original: Mariners Museum
and Univ. MIch.
Spine ends worn, taped label added to spine, edges worn with minor
loss at corners, boards soiled, bookplate (with ship image) of A.
Eterman on front pastedown, front hinge just starting but binding
still solid, images bright, one folding plan with a tear to one panel
at the fold, others about fine. A special copy. Images available upon
request. [31081] $400.00
