We offer for Sale:
Brassey, [Thomas] Lord. THE NAVAL ANNUAL, 1886. Portsmouth: J.
Griffin and Co., 1886. 550 pp. + adv. Illus. with b/w & color
drawings, b/w engravings and maps. Sm. 4to. Cloth. First edition.
First year of publication. Inscribed by J. Vavasseur to Admiral
Simpson, U.S.N. on the first blank.
Rear Admiral Edward Simpson (1824-1888) served in the
Mexican-American and Civil Wars. After the war he did tours of
ordnance duty, including missions to Europe in 1870-72 and 1883 where
he no doubt came into contact with John Vavasseur (1834-1908) of the
London Ordnance Works, a director of Armstrong's, and the developer
of the popular Vavasseur guns. Vavasseur was also exceedingly close
to Admiral Jacky Fisher, First Sea Lord, and Vavasseur chose Fisher's
son, Cecil, as his heir. A very good copy, boards rubbed, a few small
tears to the endpapers at the hinge. [31129] $200.00

Charles Kutcher
