JAPANESE HAND-PAINTED MANUSCRIPT VOLUME OF DESIGNS TO BE USED ON
KIMONO CA 1850. The volume measures 7 3/4 X 10 1/2 inches (closed)
and has 48 pages of very high quality paintings, in black and full
but light colors. A book by a master whose style is connected to both
Shijo and Nanga. He was influenced by both Northern and Southern
Sung, so when needed there is exquisitely drawn detail, but it is
mixed, also when needed by the broad brush stroke implying forms and
movements of the Southern Sung. This is the most masterful collection
of pictorial kimono designs I have ever seen, in either woodblock
print book or sketch form. They are often in the form of complete
landscapes, or landscapes made up of unusual objects. The final
designs on the kimono would have been copied exactly from these
drawings, either at this scale or enlarged. They are usually
completely finished. The upper part of the page, where there is no
design, but only the title of the drawing is wormed. But it almost
never affects the drawings in any way, which are largely in the lower
part of the page, and when they are in the upper part, in a different
quadrant then the holes are. The book has been heavily used, with a
small red blotch on several pages. There also is a little smudging
and an occasional dust mark, as well as very light foxing on a few
pages. Original wrappers with quirky title [unread] in non-standard
Japanese. Dog earing has been professionally removed, but light signs
of it may still be seen at the unused corners of the leaves. A few
typical JPEGS are available on request. $1000.00
