Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 9199 ) Parton, James (1822-1891). LIFE OF ANDREW JACKSON (IN THREE
VOLUMES).
Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1866. Original cloth, Octavos, xxx, [iii],
30-636; x, [11]-672; and x, [ii], [11]-734 pages, Engraved frontispiece
portraits. Very good.
Classic biography of Jackson which, for many historians, still comes
closer than modern efforts to truly understanding the man. Parton is plenty
critical of Jackson's policy of "Rotation in Office," though overall the
work is balanced and very readable. A valuable aspect of this book is Volume
I's 13 page bibliography of works on Jackson to 1860, with generous
annotations. See HOWES #P112; SABIN #58952; COHEN, AMERICAN PRESIDENTS, p.
51. Bound in original dark green cloth over boards with spines lettered and
ornamented in gilt, both boards with border rules and ornaments in blind,
dark brown endpapers. Four frontispiece portraits in all. Endpapers are
split along front hinges in all volumes, and along rear hinges in volumes I
and II. Bindings show some minor chipping and wear at heads of spines, gilt
remains reasonably strong. A very attractive set overall. $250.00
