MANN, HERMAN: THE COLUMBIAN PRIMER, ENLARGED AND IMPROVED: Or, An
easy and pleasant guide to the art of reading. : Adorn'd with cuts. :
To which is added, The Assembly of Divines catechism.: Boston: :
Printed by Thomas Fleet., MDCCCI. [1801]: [64] p. : ill. ; 11
cm.: Includes alphabet rhymes[with cuts], poems, an account of John
Rogers burning at the stake[with the usual cut], and "A dialogue
between Christ, Youth, and the Devil." : S. & S. 332, 1 Loc. at MWA;
Heartman, C.F. Non-New England primers, 46. This is the fourth dated
copy which has survived. The first issue was in 1790, and the first
by Thomas Fleet 1794, another 1799, the third and last known Thomas
Fleet edition. The name is, of course, patriotic, and refers to the
new United States, however the content remains similar to that of the
New England Primer. THE AAS COPY SEEMS TO BE THE ONLY OTHER ONE
KNOWN. This copy was protected for probably the whole of its long
life by a rough brown paper, home made dust jacket. Therefore the
gray boards and calf spine are in perfect order. The end papers were
removed, but the book block is crisp and firm, clean and unstained,
except for a water margin on the first two sheets. The pages have
been just a little age toned. It is in quite exceptional condition
for a primer of this date. $1000.00
