AMONGST THE MODOCS: Unwritten History.  London: Richard Bentley and 
Son, 1873.  Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, upper cover 
in black; beveled edges; coated brown endpapers, 400 pages.  Also 
known in plum cloth, edges not beveled, perhaps [?] not an original 
binding; possibly a remainder binding.   21.7 cm.  Small elegant 
monogram in purple added to title page.  Owner's name on the 
dedication page, nineteenth century, Islay.   The correct first 
edition, first binding, preceding publication in America by a 
year.  BAL 13755; Zamorano 80, #55;  Howes 608 (first entry).   An 
exceptionally nice copy.
