      Well illustrated history of that "other" ancient game of 
Scotland--sliding 50 lb. stones across frozen ponds. Many historic 
photographs and old paintings, including the earliest depiction of the game 
at Canonmills Loch, Edinburgh in the late 18th century. Packed with 
information, including the origins of the game, its appearance in history 
and literature, information on early clubs and famous matches, details about 
the stones and techniques, and much more. There is an excellent 
bibliography. Two rare curling pamphlets are reprinted at rear: "An Account 
of the Game of Curling," Edinburgh, 1811; and "The Canadian Curler's 
Manual," Toronto, 1840. Fully indexed. Bound in dark blue textured paper 
over boards with spine titled in gilt, purple endpapers. Slight fading 
toward bottom edge of upper board, shallow bumps at heel of spine, shallow 
bump to bottom edge of lower board. Jacket has a few very slight edge 
wrinkles. Clean and sound.    $75.00
