      Updates and extends the bibliographic work of William Matthews in his 
"British Diaries" (1950), "Canadian Diaries and Autobiographies" (1950), and 
"American Diaries" (1959). In addition to bringing the work forward from 
Matthews' cutoff date of 1860 to 1983, Havlice picks up many pre-1860 
diaries omitted by Matthews. Inclusion only required that the diary had been 
published in English as a book, article, chapter, dissertation, or on 
microfilm, with no regard to the nationality of the diarist or the time 
period covered. Annotations include notes on the diarist's nationality, 
occupation, place of residence, as well as comments about the content. Over 
2,500 entries. Includes a general index, an index by diarist, and a useful 
index of Matthews' bibliographies that shows which of his volumes includes 
diarists omitted from the present work. Bound in dark green cloth over 
boards with copper foil stamped spine and upper board titles. Bottom fore 
corner of upper board slightly bumped, otherwise crisp and as new.
