Contemporary gold-tooled Italian goatskin, boards paneled in gilt
and blind with central gold-tooled lozenge, spine with three raised
bands, panels ruled in gilt and blind with central florets. Three
parts in one with continuous foliation. Main title page with title in
architectural woodcut border incorporating printer's device. 'Cinqve
cant di vn nvovo libro di M. Lvdovico Ariosto' and 'Espositione di
tvtti i vocaboli ... raccolte da M. Lodovico Dolce' have separate
title pages with woodcut devices, last leaf with large woodcut
device. Woodcut portrait of Ariosto facing third title page.
Historiated initials. 52 woodcut illustrations. Printed in double
columns except for part 3. A scarcer edition from among the many
printed by Giolito. Includes the additional five cantos in the
second part. The third part contains Lodovico Dolce's commentary and
vocabulary.
Boards rubbed, spine restored, a few worm holes remaining, end leaves
renewed, free front endpaper lacking, rear endpaper chipped, lower
margin of title restored, some staining and soiling but most leaves
quite clean, tiny chip to lower fore-corner at P8 and tear at T5. A
