[Rarebooks] FS: John Berryman: STEPHEN CRANE, with fine full-page inscription

BERRYMAN,  John.  STEPHEN  CRANE.   [New  York]:  William  Sloane
Associates  (1950).  First Edition. Berryman's critical  biography  of
Crane,  an important work in the study of the writer of THE RED  BADGE
OF  COURAGE.  This  copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Berryman to  Mr.  and
Mrs.  Frederick B. Smillie, who rank second in the paragraph-long list
of  people  Berryman recognizes a debt to in his preface. An  ancestor
of  the Smillie's, Lily Brandon Munroe, was an early love interest  of
Crane's.  Berryman's full-page INSCRIPTION on the front endpaper:  "To
Mr.    &   Mrs.  Smillie/with  very   many   thanks/for   a   kindness
and/hospitality    &    the    return/of     a   shabby   but   fairly
warm/topcoat/Best/John  Berryman/21  Nov. 1950/I think you  will  find
the  chronology/of  your  letters more or less right--/they  are  much
earlier  than  Mrs./Smillie  Senior thought." Some offsetting  to  the
endpaper  with  Berryman's  inscription  from  a  previously  laid  in
clipping.  Brief  closed  tear to front of dustwrapper. Near  Fine  in
Near Fine dustwrapper with sunned spine.                      $6000.00
