Santolius, Joannes Baptista (or, Santeul, Jean). OPERA POETICA. Paris: 
Dionysium Thierry. 1694. First edition. 8vo. (18),472pp. With a fine portrait 
frontispiece of Santolius and a folding engraved plate of “Le Tellier at Chaville.” 
Bound in cont. red morocco, ornately gilt spine, and with the arms of 
Cardinal Talleyrand Periogord on both covers. A.e.g. On the title page is a 
presentation inscription (presumably from the author), “E ‘Dono aucthoris ad usum fr. 
Lud: de Bourges Prioris St. Vict. (i.e. given by the author to Louis de 
Bourges, Prior of St. Victor).” Hinges a bit rubbed, and title with a small printed 
label (“195”) pasted to a blank area.     A very attractive binding.

The very rare first edition of the poetical works of Santolius (1630-1697), 
author of Latin hymns and other sacred poems. It is not recorded in the BL 17th 
Century French holdings or in the OCLC. The Thierry printing the following 
year, 1695, is a completely different edition of 362pp. In addition to Latin 
poems, there are translations into French of some of the poems, by Corneille and 
others, as well as by Santolius.
