Clavel,  et. al 1670. Sixth Edition. Small folio (7" x 11-3/4")  bound
in  19th century calf-backed marbled boards. Containing Turkish  laws,
government,  policy, military force, courts of justice, and  commerce,
the    Mahometan    religion  and   ceremonies,   a   description   of
Constantinople,  the  Grand  Signior's  seraglio, and  his  manner  of
living;  also,  of  Greece,  with  the religion  and  customs  of  the
Grecians;  of Aegypt, the antiquity, hieroglyphicks,  rites,  customs,
discipline, and  religion  of the Aegyptians; A voyage  on  the  River
Nylvs;  of Armenia, Grand Cairo, Rhodes, the Pyramides, Colossus,  the
former  flourishing and present state of Alexandria; a description  of
the  Holy-Land,  of the Jews, and several sects of  Christians  living
there;  of Jerusalem, sepulchre of Christ, Temple of Solomon, and what
else  either  of  antiquity,  or   worth  observation;  lastly,  Italy
described,  and  the  islands  adjoyning,  as  Cyprus,  Crete,  Malta,
Sicilia,  the Aeolian  Islands,  of Rome,  Venice,  Naples,  Syracusa,
Mesena, Aetna,  Scylla  and  Charybdis,  and  other  places  of  note.
Illustrated  with  engraved  maps  and plates in the  text,  with  one
folding  panoramic view.  In addition to being a traveler, Sandys  was
also  a  poet and an early resident of Virginia. Lacks the  additional
engraved  title page and the large folding map. One leaf supplied from
another  edition  and sized; last leaf missing blank corner  with  old
repair.  Armorial  bookplate  of  Hopwell Hall  with  another  private
bookplate  below  it.  Front joint split but cover  securely  held  by
cords. Generally clean, solid, Very Good copy.                $1250.00
