"A Brief History of Pawnbroking. With Full Narrative of How the Act of
1872 was Fought for and Obtained and the Stolen Goods Bill Opposed and
Defeated"

By Alfred Hardaker.

Published in London by Jackson Ruston and Keeson: 1892.

This interesting text begins with several chapters on the ancient history
of pawnbroking, the early English money lenders, and acts regarding
pawnbroking prior to the 19th century. It then moves on to a discussion of
the trade and its regulation and reform in 19th century England,
specifically the reform attempts of the 1840 and 50s, which culminated in
the legislative fights between 1868 and 1872, during which the author
describes himself as "Secretary to the National Association in each
struggle". One almost wants to hum some sort of fight song...

Hardcover. 5.25"x7.5", viii + 367 pages; original green cloth covers with
elaborate decorations in gilt and black; some discoloration on the half
title, else a beautiful copy, fine and bright and tight. $150.00
