GIDEON WELLES. (1802-1878) United States Secretary of the Navy under
Abraham Lincoln. Autographed letter signed, (Als). Approx. 9 3/4" x 7
1/2". (1824). Northfield Vt. Two pages to Captain Partridge
enumerating reasons for leaving the Military Academy at Norwich,
(later Norwich University). He states that his father is old and
failing, his property is suffering and his younger brother needs his
assistance. His older brothers are unreliable. His father had wanted
him to have a liberal education and now four years later "I am now at
twenty-two almost an ignoramus" . He than praises school's influence
over him and states his efforts have not been in vain. He also asks
for confidentiality and to have this missive returned to him. $495.00
