[WELD, Theodore Dwight]. AMERICAN SLAVERY AS IT IS: TESTIMONY OF A
THOUSAND WITNESSES. New York: American Anti-Slavery Soc. 1839. First
Edition. 224 pages. Blockson 9148; Sabin 102547. American Imprints
(53950) cites an edition in 1836, but no other source we have
consulted mentions an edition in that year. This important and
horrifying compilation of facts and testimony, mostly from
slaveholders, is primarily taken from newspapers published in slave
states. A note to the reader from the editors invites those who
"think the atrocities ... incredible" to come to their offices to
examine the original newspapers. Moderate foxing, occasional stain.
Contemporary owner signature and statement about slavery on front
free endpaper. Backstrip partly lacking; some loss to covers, mostly
at the lower front cover. Very Good and quite scarce in original
binding. $750.00
