ADAPTED TO AMERICAN TOPOGRAPHY AND IMPROVED FIRE-ARMS [THREE 
VOLUMES]. New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1874. 582 pp.; 530 pp.; 
viii, 445 pp. Illus. with b/w drawings and musical scores. 32mo. 
Original pebbled morocco (in red, orange, and blue), gilt titles and 
emblems on front board, with brass clasps (hardback). First editions 
(Infantry is first thus). Signed by (on two) and gift of Capt. Hough 
D. Bowker of the U.S. Army Signal Corps.

Having decided to make its manuals of tactics for the three arms of 
the service uniform in 1874, the Army published these three volumes; 
Artillery Tactics (in red), the Cavalry (in orange), and the revised 
edition of the standard infantry tactics by Upton (in blue). OCLC 
show 5 copies of Artillery, 13 of Cavalry, and 29 of Infantry. 
Complete sets are uncommon. Spines sunned and worn at head and heel, 
edges rubbed, front board a bit tender on one volume, all with the 
bookplates of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United 
States, Commandery of the State of Illinois on front pastedowns, 
shelf stickers on foot of backstrip, bindings solid, clasps still 
working, with rear pin replaced on one. Good to very good copies.

sales tax or forward a tax id number. Libraries and Institutions can 
be billed. Trade allowance. Postage for Domestic orders is $4.00 for 
the first book and $1.50 for each additional volume. Books are 
normally shipped Media Mail. For international orders, postage is 
calculated individually. All books may be returned in original 
condition for any reason within two weeks with prior notification.
