[MICHEAUX, Oscar]. THE CONQUEST ... BY A NEGRO PIONEER. Lincoln,
NE: The Woodruff Press 1913. First Edition. Illustrated with
photographs. Pioneer African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux's
first book, a self-published novel with autobiographical elements
issued in an edition of only 1500 copies. Micheaux was a successful
farmer, who eventually lost his land as a victim of fraud, and a
writer of black pulp fiction. Realizing the growing potential of
motion pictures, in 1914 he wrote, produced, and directed the first
two of his many films with all-black casts. Financing the films
himself and personally handling most aspects of production and
marketing, Micheaux created an industry based on the notion that film
could be an entertainment medium for blacks independent of the
constraints and pre-conceptions of the Hollywood machine. As typical
for this scarce book, the white lettering is rather rubbed though
mostly readable, less so on the spine. There is a small,
thumbnail-sized dampstain on the fore-edge of the front cover. Pencil
signatures of Roy and Mrs. Roy Woodley at the front and rear. Very
Good copy of a scarce and important book. $2500.00
