London: Printed for C. and J. Rivington..., 1825. Illus. with 39
plates, mostly maps, 11 hand-colored in outline, many double or
folding. 8vo.; 4to. Full polished calf ruled in gilt, five raised
bands, gilt decorated compartments, morocco spine labels, one in
black, one in brown. The 6th ed.: carefully rev., cor., and enl., by
the last improved Paris ed. prepared for the press by the author.
Jean-Jacques Barthelemy (1716-1795) spent nearly 30 years writing his
"Voyage du Jeune Anacharsis en Grece" (1788), perhaps the first work
of historical fiction, recounting the imaginary travels of
Anacharis, a young Scythian, to 4th century B.C. Greece during the
rule of Philip of Macedonia. Certainly a major contributor to the
rise of Philhellenism and the struggle for Greek independence.
A very good set, spines rubbed occasionally brittle, small split at
the head of the rear joint on plate volume which has scuff marks on
front and rear boards and a small dark ink stain at rear edge,
endpapers foxed, occasionally offset, rear five plates with old
dampstain, foxing mainly to the margins, signature clipped removing
small rectangle on top edge of the first blanks, plates quite nice,
leaves clean. [31678] $600.00

Charles Kutcher
