Navy League of the United States. THE NAVY LEAGUE JOURNAL. 1903-1906
[FOUR VOLUMES IN THREE]. New York: League Publication Co., 1903-1906.
vi, 96, 239; 283; 241 pp. Illus. with b/w photos and drawings. 4to.
Maroon cloth with gilt titles (hardback). First edition. A complete
run. Volumes 1 and 2 bound as one with table of contents; volumes 3
and 4 with one front wrapper bound in each.

Modeled on similar British and German periodicals, The Navy League
Journal was published "to appeal to the patriotism of the American
people, and then have the people appeal in their own way to Congress
for means of supplying the Navy's needs... The plan considers the
establishment of branches of the League in every city and town ...
and through these branches all available means will be employed to
arouse and maintain an intelligent popular interest in the Navy. The
national peace and honour must henceforth depend upon the Navy. The
Navy depends upon Congress and Congress depends upon the people. The
Navy League, therefore, proposes to educate the people in naval
affairs and to enlist their support in behalf of a policy which shall
ensure more ships, more officers and men with better training for
both, and a great naval reserve composed of hardy, patriotic young
men who can be instantly called to the nation's defence in time of
need" (Army and Navy Journal 1903). The preface by Theodore Roosevelt
clear reinforces this position. Contains articles on history,
battles, biographies, naval progress world wide, advances in nautical
technology, lists of ships, all copiously illustrated. The Journal
existed for four years before being replaced by "The Navy" in 1907.
Individual copies, much less complete runs, are uncommon. OCLC shows
only five institutions with complete sets: FDR Lib, NYPL, Univ. Wisc,
Free Lib. Phil, and the Navy Lib. Very good copies, mail fold to
issues in volumes 3 and 4, and small repair to corner of one leaf.
