Wheeler, Post; Bilibin, Ivan IAkovlevich, illus. RUSSIAN WONDER
TALES; WITH A FOREWORD ON THE RUSSIAN SKAZKI. New York: Century Co.,
1912. xix, 323 pp. Illus. with 12 color plates (incl. frontis). 8vo.
(22 cm). Decorated cloth. First edition thus. Typed book description
on the stationary of Justin Schiller', noted bookseller of Chidlren's
books, taped to free front endpaper. A somewhat elusive title, later
revised. Post Wheeler (1869-1956) was Secretary of the American
Embassy at St. Petersburg. Ivan Bilibin (1876-1942), strongly
influenced by Russian folklore, first published these illustrations
in 1899. Later he would design for the Ballets Russes. A very good
copy, binding soiled, spine darkened with a few spots and ends worn,
endpapers mildly foxed half-title, plates bright, leaves clean.
