Octavo, xiii, 383 pages, black and white photographs, plates. very good, No 
dust jacket.
      Scholarly, balanced, definitive (so far), and thus uncommon biography 
of the man generally credited with Lincoln's nomination and election as 
President. Lincoln and Davis became friends on the circuit in Illinois and 
remained so until Lincoln's death. Judge Davis was the executor of Lincoln's 
estate. King draws heavily on Davis's own papers, of which he left a large 
collection. Interesting information on Davis's Eastern Shore ancestry and 
his youth in Baltimore and Annapolis. Good bibliography. NEVINS, CWB, Vol. 
II, p. 69. Bound in yellow cloth over boards with black cloth spine titled 
in gilt. Prior owner name penned at top of front pastedown. Some minor 
extremity wear, mild stains to top of lower board, textblock edges. Clean 
and sound inside.
