WILLIAMS, William Carlos. PATERSON (Books 1-5). New York: New
Directions (1946-58). First Edition. All five volumes of Williams's
masterpiece in dustwrappers, first editions. The first four books
limited to 1000 copies, the fifth to 3000. This set, with the
exception of volume 5 which is supplied, belonged to the noted critic
Cleanth Brooks, a leader of the school of New Criticism and author of
THE WELL-WROUGHT URN. The first volume contains a number of marks and
notes in red ink in Brooks's hand, mostly revealing an attempt not
only to understand the poem but to place it in a familiar context:
witness references to THE FOUR QUARTETS and FINNEGAN'S WAKE.
Apparently, Mr. Brooks decided to give up after the first volume as
there are no notes in the remaining books. An interesting copy of one
of the landmark poems of the twentieth century. The fifth volume with
another owner's name on the front endpaper. Near Fine in like
dustwrappers with only light wear and soiling. $2000.00
