Two Volumes. Philadelphia: Carey & Lea. 1832. First edition. 12mo. 2 vols. 
(2),x,312;iv,320pp. Plus (2)pp. publisher’s ads at front of Vol. I. Orig. red 
cloth (spines faded) over boards (lightly soiled), paper spine labels (some 
chips). Uncut. Housed in a custom cloth portfolio and 1/2 red calf over cloth 
slipcase with black calf spine labels. Occasional text foxing. Cont. ownership 
inscription on front pastedowns of both vols. A very nice set.      $1,000.00

First edition of author’s first book, which is a story of Virginia. The 
preface is signed, with Kennedy’s pseudonym, “Mark Littleton.” In addition to 
being an author, Kennedy (1795-1870) was a member of Congress and Secretary of the 
Navy. BAL 11040, noting “a 36 page catalog [of ads] inserted in some copies.”
