Norton, Charles B. and Valentine, William J. REPORT TO THE GOVERNMENT
OF THE UNITED STATES ON THE MUNITIONS OF WAR EXHIBITED AT THE PARIS
UNIVERSAL EXHIBITION, 1867. New York: Office of Army and Navy
Journal, 1868. 286 pp. Illus. with 80 b/w engravings and drawings
(including 12 plates). Sm. 4to. Purple pebbled cloth stamped in
blind, gilt titles and illustration, beveled boards. Sabin 55872.
First edition. Spine title reads: "Paris exhibition 1867. Report of
the United States Commissioners. Munitions of War."
Comprehensive coverage of the state of the art in munitions and
associated items shortly after the Civil War, with chapters on
cartridges, breech-loading small arms, field ordnance, heavy
ordnance, projectiles, army accouterments, sanitary equipments,
fortifications, and iron-clad ships, of which the authors write: "The
illustrations and models of iron-clad ships of war in the Paris
Exhibition are, as a whole, more varied, comprehensive, and
interesting than any other class of war material exhibited."
Extensively illustrated with intext drawings and full page
engravings. Sabin lists pagination incorrectly as 268. Scarce. None
listed at auction in ABPC in at least the last 25 years.
Wear to spine ends else a very good copy with the bookplate of the
Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Commandery
of the State of Illinois on front pastedown, shelf sticker on foot of
backstrip, their stamp on title. [31711] $500.00
