We offer for Sale:

Bidwell, W. H., ed. THE ECLECTIC MAGAZINE OF FOREIGN LITERATURE,
SCIENCE AND ART. 1849 -1855. VOLUMES XVI, NO. I - XXXVI, NO. IV. (21
VOLUMES). New York: 1849-1855. Illus. with b/w engravings. Sm. 4to.
(18 cm. x 25 cm.). Half-bound leather over marbled boards; raised
bands; five panels with gilt fillets and floral embellishments; gilt
titles. Marbled endpapers. Speckled edges. There were slight
variations in the bindings over the years; most but not all volumes
have marbled endpapers. After 1851 the gilt embellishments were
slightly more elaborate though very close in style to the earlier
volumes and the titles became a bit bolder. Each volume contains four
issues.

The Eclectic Magazine, started in 1845, was part of a trend in
publishing international opinions and reviews both due to growing
public interest and because the original copyright holders were often
not paid royalties. This set covers one of the most vibrant periods
in both American and English literature. Aside from the reviews and
discussions of English works, and the four high quality engravings
per volume, and the hundred of articles on everything from the ascent
of Mont Blanc to the Raj to British railroads, there are early
reviews and discussions of Cooper, Melville, Hawthorne, Poe, and
Emerson, many icons of what would later be called the American
Renaissance. Some rubbing and scuffing to spines, corners, and edges,
occasional scuffed boards, scattered foxing, but otherwise a very
good tight and clean set which is uncommon in such a long consecutive
early run. [15711] $1000.00
