Secunda Editio. Paris: Carolam Guillard & Guilielmum Desboys. 1552. Thick 4to. 
(16),964,260,(216)pp. Indices. Illustrated with a total of 216 text woodcuts 
(2-1/2” x 1-3/4” or 2” x 3-1/2”), the 92 in the Old Testament by Hans Holbein, 
and the 124 in the New Testament by Pierre Regnault. Many decorative woodcut 
initials. Bound in cont. full calf, covers with numerous blind tooled 
compartments. Spine gilt stamped with title “Biblia Sacra” and a floral stamp in each 
compartment. Corners and covers with repairs in a number of places, and calf 
with considerable rubbing. Nevertheless a sound copy in a cont. binding. Title 
page somewhat soiled with one marginal repair and a few small holes. Old ink 
inscription on lower portion of title, crossed out. First 20 leaves with an old 
faded water stain on the top half of the leaf.     $3,500.00 (trade discount

The revised edition of Jean Benoit’s (d. 1573) Vulgate Bible, which had first 
appeared in 1541, here illustrated with two famous series of woodcuts, 
together for the first time. Printed by Charlotte Guillard (d. 1557) who was the 
first famous woman printer, the wife and widow of two celebrated French printers, 
Berthold Rembolt and Claude Chevalon. Adams B 1047. Not in Darlow & Moule.
