FLAGG, James Montgomery. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) WITH AN
ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR. 16 Oct. 1939. A 2-page letter of @250 words on
both sides of one sheet of paper in Flagg's hand addressed to "My
poor dear Sucker" [Willis Birchman: author, illustrator, and friend
of Flagg's]. With an ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR at the top of the letter of
a standing man with a large heart for a head nonchalantly tossing
aside his human head. Flagg explains that the cartoon is his reaction
to news from Birchman regarding an apparent boarder and the
disruption in his life. Flagg refers to a movie he made that he
wishes to show Birchman about a visitor who came for a weekend and
stayed seven years. SIGNED "Monty," as he often did when writing to
Birchman. Flagg, the epitome of the bohemian artist (certainly this
letter gives a good taste of that), was a master of portrait studies
and incisive caricatures. He created many posters for the government
and is best known for his famous "I Want You" Uncle Sam recruiting
poster, an American icon. He was elected to the Society of
Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1980. Normal creases from folding. Fine
