N. Y.: D. Appleton & Co., 1887 - 1918.  Complete set of 8 VOLUMES, with the seldom seen Volumes 7 & 8.
Volumes 1-6 in publisher's half calf with marbled boards and edges; Volume 7 in original full calf with marbled edges; Volume 8 in original publisher's cloth stamped in gold and blind, top edge gilt.  Vols 1-7 have a number of joints professionally and unobtrusively strengthened, spines are darkened, bookplates of Warren Olney.  Volume 8 is a nice copy. The last 2 volumes were published long after the original set, and are consequently missing in most sets, including all those currently on line and in recent auctions.  Many steel engravings, and very many text-illustrations, often accompanied with facsimile signatures - the latter being a particularly useful feature.  A letter concerning obtaining information is pasted into vol.8.  Charley Everett in his "Adventures of a Treasure Hunter" comments on the 
scarcity of volume 7. New or updated entries in vol. 8 include such names as David Belasco, Buffalo Bill, Luther Burbank, Ina Coollbrith, John Burroughs, Walter Damrosch, Alice French, Henry George, Wm. D. Howells, Robt.
