Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 10131) McIntosh, E[ppenetus]. W[ashington]. (1843-1927). MAJ. E. W.
MCINTOSH'S SELECTION OF SONGS, OLD SOLDIERS' TEMPERANCE, RELIGIOUS AND
FUNERAL SONGS AND MANY SPICY READINGS AND POEMS APPROPRIATE FOR ANY KIND OF
ENTERTAINMENTS; NOTHING IMMORAL.
Omaha: Self Published, [c.1905]. Wrappers, Octavo, 32 pages, black and white
drawings, photo. Very good.
Book of songs and poems, some composed by McIntosh, printed without
music. Epp McIntosh was Union veteran of the Civil War who was in 22 battles
and wounded 5 times. He was cited for valor at Vicksburg, captured at
Acworth Station, Georgia in 1864 and imprisoned at the notorious
Andersonville camp. McIntosh barely survived Andersonville and then was
aboard the steamer Sultana when it exploded, killing some 1,700 passengers.
He survived this ordeal after 14 hours in the water. After the war he slowly
recovered and spent his later years as a travelling singer, poet, minister,
and storyteller. He sold souvenir prints of a tintype "skeleton photo"
showing his condition upon release from Andersonville. This photo is
reproduced in this booklet, as is a photo of McIntosh in later life. Front
cover is illustrated with a drawing titled "Off for the War," showing
McIntosh leaving home in 1861. Stapled binding with a few minor wrinkles
along spine, a few rubs along fore edge. Someone lightly and neatly colored
the front cover illustration and one interior drawing with colored pencil.
Otherwise clean and sound.
