O. Beauchemin & Fils. 1886. Sm. 8vo. xxxii,412pp. Written in Cree. Illustrated
with a frontispiece & numerous text woodcuts (many full-page). Orig. green
cloth, blind & gilt stamped. Ecclesiastical devices embossed on both covers. A
presentation copy, inscribed on the recto of the frontis., from Lacombe to
Monsignor Brondel (of Helena, Montana). Oval ecclesiastical blind stamp on title.
A fine copy. $600.00 (trade discount allowed)
Lacombe (1827-1916), of partial Ojibway Indian descent, lived among the Cree
as early as 1852. He was the first priest in the Oblate Order to come to the
area of Alberta. He wrote numerous books in the Cree language, including a
dictionary and a grammar. OCLC lists 8 copies of this edition, but only 2 are in
the U.S. (NYPL & Yale), 6 in Canada.
