(CHILDREN’S LITERATURE) Henkel, Ambrosius. DER GROSSE ABC-BUCH. Enthaltend:
Das ABC, Wurzelworter, und Wurzelworter mit Ihren Angehangten
Ableitungssylben... Zweite Auflage. New-Market, Shenandoah County, VA: Salomon Henkel and J. H.
Lawton. 1820. 12mo. (2),92,(4)pp. Illustrated with a woodcut frontispiece,
numerous text woodcuts, and a title-page vignette. Orig. colored cloth over
pictorial printed boards, later endpapers. Full page bibliographic notation on
front free endpaper dated Oct. 29, 1925, by one of Henkel’s descendants (Elan O.
Henkel). A beautiful copy. $750.00 (trade discount allowed)
The Henkels started the first Lutheran printing house in the U.S. in 1806.
Ambrosius Henkel, who wrote the primer, also cut the woodblocks for the
illustrations. Our copy, a variant, with 2 final unnumbered leaves (a bestiary with 8
woodcuts of different animals) is quite uncommon. OCLC records only 1 copy, at
Princeton. Not in Seidensticker's "The First Century of German Printing in
America".
