[EMBLEM BOOK] KAUFFMANN, Joannes. IDEA HOMINIS
CHRSTIANO[sic]-POLITICI XXX. SYMBOLIS PRO OMNIGENO HOMINUM STATU
EXPRESSA CUM FIGURIS AENEIS. Ulm: Joanis Conradi Wohleer 1709. First
Edition. Duodecimo (3" x 5-1/8") beautifully bound in contemporary
full calf with elaborate gilt stamping on both covers and spine, all
edges gilt. Bound at the Ettaler Benedictine monastery library for
Abbott Placidus (1709-1726) during the height of that particular
monastery's binding period. The center lozenge on the front cover
depicts Mary and the Christ child surrounded by the text "Fundatrix
Monastery Ettalensis"; on the rear cover is an image of two cherubs
with the text "Placidus Abbas Ettalensis." Both covers elaborately
decorated with a gilt floral pattern as is the spine. [18], 198, [2]
pages. Title-page in red and black. Illustrated with a frontispiece,
a dedicatory coat-of-arms plate, and 30 full-page emblematic plates,
many featuring animals in various acts. OCLC locates only two copies
of this book. Near Fine in an attractive Benedictine monastery
