[Pinder, Ulrich]. SPECULUM PASSIONIS DOMINI NOSTRI JESU CHRISTI...
(Nuremberg: Federicum Peypus, Impressum. Impensis, Georgii Glockenden. 1519). Folio.
ff.lxxviii. Black letter, double column text. Illustrated with 39 large (full
page) woodcuts (3 repeats) and 1 small one. Modern vellum, spine with 5 raised
bands. Title leaf a bit soiled. The first 2 woodcuts have been hand-colored in a
somewhat pastel appearance (using orange, green & yellow). Some light
marginal stains to a few leaves, and the final leaf with a few small wormholes just
into the outer margin of a woodcut. One leaf (K1 verso) with 28 lines of early
mss. Notes. Overall a very nice, clean copy with good impressions of the
woodcuts. $12,500.00 (trade discount allowed)
This is the second edition (the first is 1507) of an important early woodcut
book, the first book to be illustrated by H. L. Schaeufelein (1480 to circa
1540). Thirty of the large Passion subjects are by Schaeufelein. Other cuts are
by Hans Baldung Grien and Wolf Taut. Scarce, only 3 copies recorded in the
auction records (ABPC) in 30 years, the last in 2000 realized 11,000 pounds (an
early 17th century binding). BL German STC p. 697. Procter 11132. Murray.
