"Early History of American Auctions- A Chapter in Commercial History"

By Ray Bert Westerfield.

A separate offprint of an essay which appeared in the Transactions of the
Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences: May, 1920.

Westerfield was an associate professor at Yale, and his study is mainly
concerned with the early 19th century use of auctions by importers and
merchants as a means of avoiding high import tariffs on goods of foreign
manufacture, and the legislation which tried to combat this problem. An
interesting sidelight on early American trade. Uncommon.

Softcover. 6.5”x9.5”, 47 pages. Ex-institutional, with several stamps, and
a perforation on the title page; cover edges slightly chipped, spine
reinforced with cloth tape, label remnant on rear cover. When they
reinforced the spine with cloth tape, they re-attached the contents to the
covers with cello tape, and that has now dried and come off, so the
contents are no longer actually attached to the covers; a fragile
pamphlet, and not in superlative condition. There are some close-up photos
of the cover, front and back, and the title page, below. $100.00
