ARCHIVE OF MATERIALS
FROM THE SECOND
BERMUDA OCEANOGRAPHIC EXPEDITION
OF DR. WILLIAM BEEBE
TO "NONSUCH"
1930.

These materials belonged to Mr. Howard C. Barnes of Tallmadge, Ohio,
who was able to join the expedition as a young student from Oberlin
College. The collection is as follows;

EXCELSIOR DIARY, 1930. A pocket diary in which Barnes has noted the
happenings of his youthful days. He attended a lecture given by Beebe
in January, contacted the Explorer with references in March and joined
the expedition in April. He notes the dives and happenings throughout
the summer at "Nonsuch". In May Barnes began his "Hard-Hat Diving" and
in June they began experimenting with the Beebe-Barton Bathysphere in
manned dives. Barnes sometimes refers to it as the"egg". He returns to
New York at the end of October. In his entries he mixes the minutia of
his life with the work he is engaged in, he writes legibly and
succinctly. Excellent content. He refers to Dr. Beebe as the Director.
There are five small snapshots pasted into the diary.

COLLECTION OF GLASS PLATE NEGATIVES FROM NONSUCH EXPEDITION. Fifty
plus glass-plate negatives of the expedition, some of which are of the
Bathysphere and other diving events, some of which have been
published. These are in a vintage wooden box, the property of H. C.
Barnes. There is a photo log from the period as well. No doubt some of
the negatives in the box are in the log but we are not claiming a 1-1
collation.
