We offer for Sale:
Ferlinghetti, Lawrence. PICTURES OF THE GONE WORLD [WITH HOLOGRAPH
POEM]. San Francisco: City Lights Pocket Bookshop, 1956 (1955)
Unpaged. Sm. 8vo. Paper wrappers. Morgan: A1b. Second edition.
Inscribed by Ferlinghetti to Arnold and Nancy Perl on the front
wrapper with the poem "Don't let that horse eat that violin" in
holograph on the verso of the contents page. This version differs
somewhat the the version published in his second book, 'A Coney
Island of the Mind.'
Arnold and Nancy Perl were leftist writers and producers. Arnold Perl
wrote the teleplay "The World of Shalom Aleichem" (1959) which
provided the basis for the Broadway mega-hit Fiddler on the Roof. He
wrote the documentary Malcolm X (1972) which Nancy produced. His
subsequent screenplay on Malcolm X, which was unfinished at the time
of his death in 1971, became an important source for Spike Lee's
later screenplay.
It is most likely that this handwritten copy of the poem "Don't let
that horse eat that violin" was written prior to the appearance of
the poem in print. The second edition of 'Pictures of the Gone World'
(offered here) was printed in March of 1956 about the time that the
Coney Island of the Mind was being written: "in the first few months
[of 1956]... he [Ferlinghetti] composed a whole new group of
twenty-nine poems, all without revision ... and borrowing a line from
Henry Miller's 'In the Night Life,' he titled it 'A Coney Island of
the Mind' and sent it off to New Directions (Silesky: Ferlinghetti:
the Artist in his Time, p.85). James Laughlin wrote back to
Ferlinghetti on Dec. 2, 1956 saying that he was just getting down to
selecting material for New Directions 16 which was not printed until
1957 about the time that the third edition of Pictures appeared
(March 1957). Coney Island of the Mind appeared in book form in
1958). A unique item and a very good copy. [33802] $950.00
