preciosa antiguedad, reales genealogias, y catalogos de dignidades

P. Coello, 1645.] FIRST EDITION. Tall 4to (28.5 x 20 cm) in full tree
calf, spine and morocco spine label stamped in gilt; 9 [of 11] p.l.,
300 [of 301] numb. l. (some erratic pagination, as issued); woodcuts,
head- and tail-pieces, ornamental initials.
Lacking frontispiece, title-page, one leaf of the preface by Don
Joseph Pellicer, and the last leaf of the text, otherwise complete.
First edition of this monumental, encyclopedic survey of Spain and
Portugal by Rodrigo Méndez Silva, historian, pioneering geographer and
industrious genealogist. More than 600 pages, with entries for more
than 750 cities, towns and other localities, describing their
populations, geography, buildings, etc., the account of each city
accompanied by a list of authorities. The last 80+ pages of the volume
comprise Méndez Silva's <i>Genealogias Reales de España</i> (lacking
the last leaf). ... An imperfect, but essentially sound example of an
important and very uncommon work: we find no other copies available on
any bookdealer databases and OCLC locates only 7 copies in the U.S...
