A very nice copy indeed of this classic history of extravagance and  
the state's efforts to control it through sumptuary laws, from Roman  
times to the eighteenth century. With many examples of lavish spending  
and elaborate costumes cited, it is consulted now as a work of social  
as well as economic history...
