[John Greenleaf Whittier, ed.] The North Star: The Poetry of Freedom,
by Her Friends. Philadelphia: Merrihew and Thompson, No. 7 Carter's
Alley, 1840. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover 16mo (15.5 x 9.5cm) in original
glazed paper-covered boards, rebacked with modern cloth tape; page
edges gilt; 117 + [1] pp.

Edited anonymously by the Quaker poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf
Whittier, who, in addition to the prefatory note, contributed two
poems (with a third commonly attributed to him). Other contributors
include John Quincy Adams, Elizur Wright, Jr., William J. Allinson,
William Tappan, Elizabeth H. Whittier, etc. A landmark in the
abolitionist movement, especially as associated with the Society of
Friends.
