Duodecimo, viii, 215 pages, black and white plates. .
Story of the rescue of six Irish prisoners by an American ship captain
from New Bedford, Massachusetts. The Fenians were held by the British at the
penal colony in Freemantle, Australia. Captain George S. Anthony, commander
of the bark Catalpa, was hired by Clan-na-Gael to rescue the men. Bound in
dark green cloth over boards with gilt spine and upper board titles, gilt
illustration of the Catalpa on upper board, top edge gilt. Tissue-guarded
frontispiece photo of Capt. Anthony. This copy lacks the front free
endpaper. Binding shows minor extremity wear with a some chipping and
fraying at spine ends, short tears along joint ends, rubs at corner tips,
shallow bumps at corner tips. Rather scarce book in the original edition.
