FS - Book of maps: Bordnotkarte Deutsches Reich, Westhalfte: pre-Anschluss

Bound as a clothbound book, folding map of the western half of
Germany. Includes adjacent portions of France, Denmark, Austria, and
Sweden. My translator indicates that the other countries' place names
are their original names and this dates the map to pre-March1938
before the German Anschluss "absorbed" Austria and gave many place
names new German names. This defiance of the terms of the Treaty of
Versailles was an aggressive seizure of power that changed the area
of German influence and subsequent wartime maps.

11 3/4" x 5 1/2". Bound in thin grey canvas, the map is laid out in
quadrants. "Pages" are turned sideways and vertically, as well, each
turn revealing a new quadrant of the map. Each quadrant is color
coded. The four squares of each quadrant are stiff paper and
laminated into clear rubber or plastic sheet, the spaces between the
squares serving as hinges for the folding of the quadrants. Takes
some practice to understand how to read and use, but overall a very
clever way to design a convenient map.

Has no indications of being of military origin, but has the faint
odor of the anti-fungal chemical applied to nearly anything military.
My translator says the map appears to be made for emergency service
use, like police, fire, or ambulance.

With three ownership ink stamps of Lt. Col. Francis C. Keith, CWS.
Related information indicates he was stationed in Krefeld Germany,
and was Infantry from a National Guard unit in Arkansas. Subsequent
ownership label of Jack McKim Vorhies, noted numismatic author of
books about obsolete bank notes.

One hinge split between two quadrant squares, doesn't impede the use
or integrity of the map. Overall soil to the cloth binding with spine
heavily creased. Corners, edges, and spine ends bumped. Paper label
to the front cover is heavily soiled.

Well-used, but intact and an artifact of a time before a great
crisis. $100 USD postpaid in the 50 states. Others inquire.
