JOHNSON, Lyndon Baines. THE ROAD TO JUSTICE. THREE MAJOR
STATEMENTS ON CIVIL RIGHTS. [1965]. First Edition. A pamphlet of 55
pages in stiff green covers with gilt lettering and illustrated with
numerous photographs, presumably published by the U.S. government.
Included are "The American Promise," remarks by the President to a
Joint Session of Congress on 15 March 1965; "To Fulfill These Rights,
" commencement remarks by the President at Howard University on 4
June 1965; and "The Doors Open," remarks by the President at the
Signing Ceremony of the Voting Rights Bill at the Capitol on 6 August
1965. At the top of the contents page, Johnson has written, "To Leo
Rosten/With the hope you can read it and help me achieve it," and
SIGNED as president "Lyndon B. Johnson." Rosten, of course, is the
celebrated author of THE JOYS OF YIDDISH, THE EDUCATION OF HYMAN
KAPLAN, and many other books. The passage of the Civil Rights Act of
1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 are certainly Johnson's
greatest achievements, though they are often hidden in the shadows of
his stubborn and anguished engagement in Vietnam. The March speech
was an especially powerful one. Johnson stated, "Their cause must be
our cause too. Because it is not just Negroes, but really it is all
of us, who must overcome the crippling legacy of bigotry and
injustice," and then paused and said, "And we shall overcome."
Hearing LBJ adopt the rallying cry of black protest as his own
brought Martin Luther King, Jr., watching with his aides, to tears. A
particularly fine, authentic example signed as President to a
well-known writer with a superb inscription. Fine $3000.00
