[Utah] Chittenden, L. E. (Lucius Eugene). THE EMMA MINE. A STATEMENT
OF THE FACTS CONNECTED WITH THE EMMA MINE; ITS SALE TO THE EMMA
SILVER MINING COMPANY (LIMITED) OF LONDON, AND ITS SUBSEQUENT HISTORY
AND PRESENT CONDITION. New York: B.H. Tyrrel, Law Printer, 1876. 76
pp. 8vo. Plain paper wrappers. Eberstadt 138-669. OCLC: 21527481.
Spence: British Investments and the American Mining Frontier:
pp.139-190. First edition. Prepared for the use of the Committee of
Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives, in the Investigation
of the Connection of Gen. Schenck with said Company.

"A very scarce history of the famous mine," (Eberstadt).

The Emma Silver Mine, touted as "par excellence, THE mine of Utah" by
no less than the London Mining Journal, devolved into scandal,
becoming one of the most infamous mining companies in the American
West. Robert Cumming Schenck (1809-90) while minister to Great
Britain, (1871-76), allowed the Emma Silver Mining Company (for a
large fee of course) to use his name in promoting its stock, which
soon proved fraudulent. This congressional investigation forced his
resignation.

A very good copy, later wrapper repaired at the front hinge. [33817] $500.00
