Greek text. Johann August Ernesti's (1707-1781)
edition first published in 1759-64 on the heels
of a renewed interest in Homer, and was based on
that of Samuel Clarke (1675-1729), an English
philosopher and supporter and associate of
Newton. In its time, Clarke's work was considered
the best critical edition. The text in turn was
from earlier editions of Cornelis Schrevel
(1608-1664) and Joshua Barnes (1654-1712).
Full morocco, red spines with five raised bands
ruled in gilt, compartments with gilt florets,
heads and heels heavily decorated in gilt, boards
