HESSE, Hermann. EINE STUNDE HINTER MITTERNACHT. Leipzig: Eugen
Diederichs, 1899. First Edition. Original printed wraps with the front
cover neatly and professionally reattached. The Nobel Prize winner's
very scarce second book, written when he was 22 and working in a
bookstore. Most copies seem to have been rebound in cloth and boards due
to the fragile original binding. With a four-line INSCRIPTION in German
by the author dated August 1906 and SIGNED in full. The inscription
refers to the place that served as the setting for the stories of the
book and is the location where Hesse inscribed the volume. Books
inscribed by the author of STEPPENWOLF and SIDDHARTHA are decidedly
uncommon. Light chipping to the spine tips. Near Fine in a handsome and
recent burgundy half morocco box. $2,500.00
