Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 10168 ) Houser, M[artin]. L[uther]. ABRAHAM LINCOLN, STUDENT. HIS
BOOKS (SIGNED).
(Peoria): Privately Printed, (1932). First printing, Wrappers, Octavo, 47
pages, black and white photographs. Very good.
A study of Lincoln's relationship with books and an attempt to
identify the ones he read during his lifetime. This monograph revises
Houser's 1929 compilation of Lincoln's books, adding several titles and
deleting one. The alphabetical list of books Lincoln read includes
references and indicates when Lincoln's own copy is known to be extant.
INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Houser at top recto of frontispiece. Designed and
printed by Edward J. Jacob for private distribution. MONAGHAN #3328. Bound
in thick soft paper covers with Yapp edges, front cover printed in dark
brown. Covers show some chipping at head of spine, heel of spine, and two
short sections mid-spine. Yapp edges are wrinkled and lightly rubbed. Lower
fore corner of frontispiece shows some silverfish lacing, else fine inside.
Scarce. $125.00

(No. 3370 ) Howells, W[illiam]. D[ean]. [Preface by Harry E. Pratt]. LIFE
OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN, BY W. D. HOWELLS: THIS CAMPAIGN BIOGRAPHY CORRECTED BY
THE HAND OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN IN THE SUMMER OF 1860 IS REPRODUCED HERE WITH
CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THE APPEARANCE OF THE ORIGINAL VOLUME.
Springfield: Abraham Lincoln Association, 1938. Limited edition, Hardcover,
Octavo, xvii, [vi], xi-xii, 17-94 pages, + index, black & white frontispiece
portrait. Fine.
A faithful physical reproduction of the Lincoln portion of the 1860
campaign biography, "The Lives and Speeches of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal
Hamlin," written by Howells. The significance of this edition is that it is
a facsimile of the copy which Lincoln personally read and annotated at the
request of his friend, Samuel C. Parks, in 1860. The result is a generally
unacknowledged "autobiography," as we herein have Lincoln's own personally
approved version of many debated incidents in his life based on his
pencilled corrections and margin notes along with those portions of the work
that he let stand. The Preface by Harry Pratt gives historical background
about Howells and this campaign biography, and some interesting analysis of
Lincoln's corrections. The publisher's promotional leaflet for this book is
laid in. MONAGHAN #45. Printed by R.R. Donnelly and Sons in an edition of
1,250 copies. Bound in marbled paper over boards with black cloth spine and
black title block on upper board lettered in gilt, slate gray topstain.
Tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Lincoln after a Matthew Brady
photograph. Hinges tight, prior owner bookplate on front pastedown. Lovely
copy. $175.00
