Hollis, Thomas. MEMOIRS OF THOMAS HOLLIS... [Compiled by Francis Blackburne].
London: Printed (by J. Nichols). 1780. Lg. 4to. (14" tall). 2 vols.
viii,506;(507)-840,(24)pp. Index. Illustrated with a total of 36 fine plates, including
the mezzotint of Sir Isaac Newton at p. 801 (often missing). Complete (see
note below). 19th century half dark purple calf over marbled boards. Hinges a
bit rubbed, but overall a fine untrimmed copy. $1,000.00 (trade discount
allowed)
An important work for 18th century English studies, on the life of Thomas
Hollis (1720-1774). With the added 48pp. of text in Vol. 2 (called "Appendix to
the Memoirs") pp. 533* to 576*, 579*, 580*, 577* to 584*. These pages are
Francis Blackburne's essay, "Remarks on Johnson's Life of Milton," which was also
separately published in 1780. The fine plates and portrait are by Bartolozzi,
Basire, and Cipriani. This scarce work was privately printed and has come up at
auction only 6 times in the past 30 years, most of the copies lacking some
plates. Some references state "with 37 plates," which is the number listed in
the "directions to the binder," but there is no plate required at p. 818, which
reads, "to put a guard at." The correct total is 36 plates; 13 in Volume 1,
and 23 in Volume 2. See Lowndes, p. 1092. Sabin (under Blackburne) #5690 stating
in the year 1868, "This privately printed work is now rather scarce."
